EAST CORNWALL PREMIER LEAGUE: PREMIER DIVISION
ST NEWLYN EAST AFC 4 ROCHE FC 0
Saw St Newlyn East last season away at Gunnislake and said I would pop along to a home match of theirs when in the area on holiday in Cornwall. On arrival, I was greeted and soon had the track and trace done and scanned the NHS app that was on the enterance in to the ground. It was also the first time that the club had held their 50/50 raffle.
The ground is a very scenic one, Newquay is over to the right hand side in the distance, with the strong wind gusting over the ground from the Atlantic Ocean, whilst behind the goal was the local church. Down one side was a stand, but was taped up due to covid conditions to stop folks standing in it.
The match kicked off and the Saints were soon in their stride, as ELLIOTT POWELL fresh back from a break in July from Australia stroke home a early penalty on 6 minutes to make it 1-0.
Roche played on the counter attack but really didnt put anything on target, whilst the homesters played some neat short passing football but again looked a little short trying to thread that final ball through to their frontmen, but this changed in the 37th minute, when ELLIOTT POWELL made it a brace for him and his club to put them 2-0 up.
At Half Time, the raffle draw was made and it proved a lucky day for the Powell family as Elliott's mum had the lucky number and won a crisp £10 note, Im quite sure it wont change her life, but may pay for a pint for her lad.
The Second Half kicked and that man ELLIOTT POWELL was soon bagging his hat trick when turning on the ball and planting it in to the net giving the poor visiting keeper no hope of getting to it on 48 minutes.
The Saints began to play the ball around the pitch and looked like Roche may well crumble and on 61 minutes, a trip led to another Saints penalty but this time up stepped CALLUM FAULKNER who hit the ball straight down the middle of the goal to make it 4-0.
To the visitors credit, they didnt give up and could well have got a goal back but a superb save from the home keeper.
A nice club that is well worthy of a visit with a friendly bunch of volunteers
